Brief History

Charles Giles married Mrs. Charlotte Fishenden while she was about six months pregnant with their first child Charles.

Charles Giles had the distinction of living and probably working on the same farm that his grandfather owned, and his uncles squandered.  Instead of the master, however, he was an employee.  From before 1871 until perhaps his death in 1890 he was the farm bailiff at Hammond Farm in Goudhurst, Kent.  As farm bailiff he oversaw work on that farm, managing workers in the name of the owner.  It is possible, however, that he merely lived at the farm and worked elsewhere.

Certainly Charles had to know that this property had been in the family, but we have no indication of what he thought about that.

While on an LDS proselyting mission in 1875 David King Udall (Johnís great-grandson) visited the farm in the company either of another great-grandson, David Udall, or David Udallís father John.  David King gave no indication of talking to Charles, or even knowing that his first-cousin-once removed lived at and oversaw the farm.

David King Udall missionary journal, excerpted in Arizona Pioneer Mormon

July 31 1875.

We passed the farm where great-grandfather, John Udall, lived. He owned it but some of his sons drank the place up and then had to work for a living.

Sunday, August 1 1875.

We went to the old house where Uncle John was born on the old farm that grandfather and his brothers squandered. It is a beautiful farm that belonged to great-grandfather who was well-off. He owned the farm and carried on a wool sorting business.
