Brief History

Udall Giles married Hannah Drawbridge.  There is a strong possibility that she was related to Udall’s aunt Ann Drawbridge.  Though Ann had no sister named Hannah that we know of, the name is not common and of course the family already had an association.

This family had middle class pretensions.  Son George was a Preacher’s Mate as a teenager, but appears on future censuses as an agricultural worker.  Udall described himself as a bailiff on the 1871 census.

A bailiff was an under-sheriff, tasked with mundane civil & criminal business like serving papers, executing writs, and performing arrests.  However, since he described himself as a farm worker on the census before and after 1871, Udall was probably not this kind of bailiff.  In England, the overseer of farming work crews would often be known as a “farm bailiff”.  Udall’s brother Charles described himself as just this sort of overseer on the very same census.

Still, in order to be either sort of bailiff, Udall had to be judged as stable and dependable enough for the undertaking.  He was a person of some small standing in the community, at least.
