Brief History

David Udall probably knew a great deal about his uncle John, but very little of detail has come down to us.

John first married in 1798 to Elizabeth Burren, who was pregnant at the time.  They married in Chatham where she lived, and the wedding record claims that he lived there too, at the time.  They lived in Maidstone, a few miles from Chatham, and had three doomed children in quick succession.  The longest-lived was buried 42 days after christening.

Elizabeth died as well in 1801.  John appears to have continued living in Maidstone.  As the oldest living son in the family, he did go back to Goudhurst to administer his fatherís estate in 1802.  Shortly thereafter he was back in a parish close to Maidstone, where he married again, to Martha Plummer.  She was also pregnant at the time.  After the christening of their daughter in 1802, no further definite trace of them is known.

A supposed death year of 1838 has come down to me, but I do not know its provenance.

Reminiscence from the journal of David Udall

When I left England there was only Jesse my father and George alive.

Note: Johnís nephew David left England at the start of 1851, so John would have died before that.
